What is it about Disney villains that make us love them so much? I suppose that, without the villains, we wouldn’t have heroes – the prince, the princess, the sister – but what if the Disney villain was the hero after all?
Disney’s newest musical anthology, Descendants, is based on the idea that all of our favorite we-love-to-hate villains have been exiled to their own far-off kingdom of sorts called the Isle of The Lost, along with their offspring. This is when we meet the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil and Jafar.
Disney has always been crafty at reaching a variety of audiences, from the toddler watching her first Disney movie to the teen watching High School Musical for the 100th time; even parents remember their first Disney film and many of the lines from all the classic in between. When I screened Disney’s Descendants last month, it was easy to see that this would be the High School Musical for the new generation – the film that kids, tweens, teens, and parents would love.
Ben (Mitchell Hope), the son of Belle and the Beast, is about to be crowned king and as his first act as the new king-in-training, he’s decided to choose four evil descendants to attend prep school on Auradon, the kingdom of good. Among those chosen are Mal, daughter of Maleficent (Liv and Maddie’s Dove Cameron); Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen (Sofia Carson); Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil (Cameron Boyce); and Jay, son of Jafar (Booboo Stewart).
Disney’s Descendants premiers Friday, July 31st on the Disney Channel.
