Perhaps you’ve heard the news by now; Marvel is kicking ass at ComicCon this week. Huge breaking news everywhere, from the announcement of the identity of Star-Lord’s father to more Doctor Strange exclusives, it’s almost more than a Marvel fan can handle. Almost.
Marvel has also announced the identity of a certain other superhero, Captain Marvel. Despite some speculation, the character will be female and will be played by Academy Award-winner Brie Larson.
Who Is Captain Marvel?
Carol Danvers, the first character to use the moniker Ms. Marvel, was an Airforce pilot who was caught in an explosion with the Kree superhero Captain Marvel. Their DNA merged which gave Danvers super powers. In the comics, once Captain Marvel passes, Ms. Marvel assumes the name. Marvel has several series of comics with different Captain Marvels, but Marvel Studios has confirmed that Carol Danvers will be the subject of the film.
The origin story is similar to that of Hal Jordan’s (AKA Green Lantern) so it’s been speculated that Captain Marvel’s backstory might change.
Ms. Marvel’s powers include flight, enhanced strength, durability and the ability to shoot concussive energy bursts from her hands. She is also a skilled pilot and trained in hand to hand combat.

Why Captain Marvel Is A Big Deal
Captain Marvel will be Marvel Studio’s first female-led superhero film ever. Although the film won’t be in theaters until 2019, there’s no doubt this will create a ton of additional hype for the film and for Marvel Studios. Since the comics have paired her with both The Avengers and Guardians of The Galaxy, this could mean… dare we say it… that Captain Marvel could be the bridge between the two TEAMING UP TOGETHER. TOGETHER, you guys.
