Very few people know this about me, but Bert from Disney’s Mary Poppins was one of my first crushes as a kid. Well, He-Man was first for obvious reasons, then Bert. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the original 1964 musical or sang ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’.
Now, actress Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train, Into The Woods) is starring as the titular character in the forthcoming sequel, Mary Poppins Returns. Now, we have our very first look at Blunt in full costume, practically perfect in every way.
In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
The film is adapted from the P.L. Travers’ novels. In fact, there will be more characters taken from the books, like recently-announced Angela Lansbury, who plays a maniacal balloon vendor!
The cast will also include Lin-Manuel Miranda as a musical lamplighter named Jack, Meryl Streep as Mary’s cousin Topsy, and Colin Firth as banker William Weatherall Wilkins.
Perhaps even more exciting is original ‘Mary Poppins’ star Dick Van Dyke who will also make a featured appearance in the sequel. No telling what she’ll be pulling from that carpet bag…
The film arrive in theaters Dec. 25, 2018.
