When Disney purchased Lucasfilms in 2012, they announced definitive plans to scrap the Expanded Universe from years past and instead, expand the history that George Lucas created. This has included new novels and comics, the animated Star Wars Rebels series, and a series of anthology films that will explore the back stories of some our favorite characters, introduce new ones, and fill the voids between the original Star Wars films.
The first of these, opening in theaters December of this year – almost exactly one year after Star Wars: The Force Awakens – is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It seems that the studio plans to keep this one-a-year schedule, as Star Wars: Episode VIII (yet to be officially named) is due to open in theaters in December 2017.
In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.
Other than a few teaser posters and this trailer, the studio hasn’t given us much to go on as far as the story line. We do know that this story is set between the timelines of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, as resistance to the Galactic Empire begins to build momentum.
We also know that our heroine is a female lead named Jyn Erso and is played by Academy Award-nominee Felicity Jones. She’s a rebel with little or no respect for authority so it seems that becoming part of the rebellion is the perfect destiny for her character. It also appears that she’ll be a key player in stealing the plans for the Death Star.
Jyn Erso might be leading her own band of misfits, played by confirmed stars Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk (who I LOVE), and Riz Ahmed. There’s much speculation about the identity and relations of these characters to Jyn Erso, the Rebellion, and to some of the more well-known characters in the Star Wars storyline.
So far, the only character that has a confirmed history with the already established timeline is Forest Whitaker. Whitaker playes Saw Gerrera who was featured in the fifth season of the animated Clone Wars. Along with his sister Steela, Gerrera fought alongside well known heroes Anakin Skywalker, Obi-wan Kenobi, and the young Ahsoka Tano.
