This spring, for our family, the way in which we will spring clean our home will take on a whole new meaning. We’re finally building our dream home which means we’re not only spring cleaning our home, we’re preparing a whole new life. In addition to the level of cleaning that we would do with our spring cleaning, we’re now getting rid of things, donating things, and packing things.
Spring cleaning before you move is the ideal way to get organized and to take stock of your assets for your new home. It can help you get rid of what you don’t need or no longer use and to make a list of things you’ll need for your new home. That way, when the big moving day comes, you’re not further overwhelmed with everything that you need to do.
1. Don’t Hesitate, Donate – Throughout our lives, we have a tendency to collect things, from clothing that no longer fits – because we’re sure someday it will – to years of elementary art projects from our kids, to baby items that we’ve been planning to donate. I believe the rule goes, if you’ve not used it or worn it in a year, donate it. If there’s an antique table that’s been sitting in your garage for two years because you never got around to refinishing it, donate it. Keep in mind, most items that you donate can be itemized as a tax deduction at the end of the year if you itemize.
2. Have A Garage Sale – Items that you need to purge because you’re moving to a smaller place or you plan on getting new items with the new home can be sold in a garage sale. You can use the money you make towards your moving expenses and donate any items that don’t sell. That way, you’re not having to repack those items.
3. Get Your Ducks In A Row – Now that you’ve purged your unwanted items, it’s time to clean. Make sure that you have all the cleaning supplies you need so that you’re not stopping to go shopping, after which is can be hard to get motivated. You may consider having large trash bags, furniture polish, dusters, sponges, stain remover, mop and broom, rubber gloves and other items. Make a list and check it twice!
Because we’re moving into a large space, and because we’ve recently moved in together, one thing we opted for was a larger bed. It has been the best thing we’ve ever done! We love our new bed, mostly because we opted for a Nature’s Sleep Sapphire Gel Memory Foam Mattress. Neither of us have ever slept better and I’ll be honest, I had my doubts that a mattress could make this much of a difference. Choosing the right mattress is the key to a perfect night’s sleep, no matter how stressful the move.
